Since 2014, the Cumberland County Improvement Authority has served as the county’s lead entity for economic development and redevelopment, investing over $588 million in construction and public improvement projects. Through more than 30 shared services agreements, the Authority has helped local governments enhance firehouses, fleet services, and waste collection—resulting in $4.7 million in taxpayer savings. In 2019, the Authority merged with the Cumberland Empowerment Zone Corporation to expand access to technical services and public financing for businesses and public agencies.

The Authority has continued to lead strategic initiatives that strengthen the local economy. During the Covid-19 crisis, it acted as a central resource hub for businesses. With an overall economic impact exceeding $1 billion, its investments have created new jobs, expanded workforce training, and driven long-term growth across Cumberland County.

Our Latest Projects

For both private and public entities, The Authority has the ability and expertise to develop, construct, and manage all types of facilities. The Authority can assist in all phases of development – from initial design and bidding, to permitting, construction and final completion. In all aspects, projects will be compliant with regulations, budgets, and timelines. The Authority’s role and involvement varies from project to project, with the over-riding goal to maximize project funding and achieve the optimal use of expertise and available resources.

Downtown Redevelopment Project

This $11+ million project is a cornerstone to the redevelopment of Bridgeton’s downtown. The Authority facilitated pre-development and environmental remediation on the site, after which the project was transferred to a private developer. With construction underway, the 30,000 office center for Complete Care will bring new foot traffic and health services to downtown. The downtown will also benefit from a new parking area for 75 cars and a pedestrian walkway over Church Lane.

Bridgeton Fire Station

The City of Bridgeton Fire Department has several code violations along with building deficiencies including outgrowing the original 1898 structure and 1975 apparatus bay addition. As part of the process, the vacant City Hall building located across the street has ample square footage and property to accommodate the needs of the department now and well into the future. Project budget costs include general construction, furniture, fixtures and equipment, landscaping, professional services including architectural, engineering, and legal fees, bond fees, project management fee and a project contingency. This budget is based on an estimated fit-out of a facility (including renovations and new construction) totaling 29,926 square feet. Current Fire Department operations are housed at 1 Orange Street. The address of the new location will be 168 East Commerce Street (Block 121, Lot 1).
