The Authority’s September 2025 Household Hazardous Waste and Document Shredding Day is a Success

MILLVILLE, NEW JERSEY. (October 1, 2025) – The Authority hosted its final Household Hazardous Waste and Document Shredding event of 2025 on Saturday, September 13. Co-sponsored by the City of Millville, Cumberland County Utilities Authority, and Landis Sewerage Authority, the event was held at The Authority’s Solid Waste Complex located at 169 Jesse Bridge Road, Millville, NJ 08332.

Every year, the Authority hosts three Household Hazardous Waste and Document Shredding events, allowing Cumberland County residents to safely dispose of their household hazardous waste and shred any personal documents, free of charge. A total of 838 Cumberland County vehicles attended the September 2025 event, with participating attendees from all fourteen Cumberland County municipalities. This event was the largest event held at The Authority’s Solid Waste Complex to date.

As a result of the September 13 event, 11.92 tons (23,840 pounds) of hazardous waste were properly disposed. In addition, 1,250 gallons of used oil and antifreeze were collected, and 8.59 tons (17,180 pounds) of paper were shredded and recycled during the September event. A total of 3.4 tons (6,800 pounds) of electronic waste were collected, sorted, stacked, and shipped out for recycling.

“Household Hazardous Waste and Document Shredding events are one of the many ways The Authority continues to improve our tomorrow. This event proves to be beneficial for county residents to take part in a cleaner and safer environment, and we look forward to continuing this service for residents in 2026,” explained Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Coordinator, Nathan Farrell. 

Throughout 2025, The Authority’s Household Hazardous Waste and Document Shredding events serviced 2,039 residents, resulting in the proper disposal of 25.31 tons (50,620 pounds) of hazardous waste, 3,054 gallons of used oil and antifreeze, 6.6 tons (13,200 pounds) of electronic waste, and the shredding and recycling of 23.2 tons (46,400 pounds) of personal documents.

“The Authority is proud to provide this shared service opportunity to Cumberland County residents, free of charge,” said Shelly Schneider, President. “Throughout the year, The Authority serviced 2,039 residents, allowing them to dispose of their hazardous waste and shred personal documents safely and properly. These events would not be possible without our community partners and Authority staff.”

To facilitate collections between events, residents can dispose of electronic waste and used motor oil at their municipal drop off center and participating auto parts stores. For more information, visit theauthoritynj.com/recycling-dropoff/.

Freon, CFCs/refrigerators, air conditioners, coolers, tires, concrete, and wood are not accepted at Household Hazardous Waste events. Residents can properly dispose of them at the Solid Waste Complex for a fee, during normal business hours. 

Also not accepted, latex paint, which is water-based and non-hazardous. To properly dispose of latex paint, mix paint with clay-based kitty litter or Speedy Dry so the can is three-fourths full. Allow the paint/kitty litter or Speedy Dry mixture to absorb until it is no longer pourable. Replace the lid and dispose of the paint can with household trash.
